I have to agree - the sight of the word bildungsroman sends me shuddering and not only because it is such an ugly word itself. I hated Portrait as well and then was further made to suffer watching a film version of it at uni which was no more enjoyable. The Literary Nomadhttp://theliterarynomad.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069628911357973492.post-79595864491313399132011-01-24T02:16:38.096+00:002011-01-24T02:16:38.096+00:00I can't read stream of consciousness, and I di...I can't read stream of consciousness, and I didn't make it through more than a paragraph of PotAaYM. I agree, though, I don't like it much. I can't stand Woolf or most Gertrude Stein for that reason. I haven't read any Joyce, though. I do have a few of his books (Dubliners, Ulysses, and Portrait) on my shelves, but I havne't gotten to them yet, mostly because I feel like I won't like it. I did try Ulysses -twice- and didn't get more than 15 pages in before quitting, both times.Roof Beam Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06792884580084363046noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069628911357973492.post-33340997114369802512011-01-21T15:34:13.559+00:002011-01-21T15:34:13.559+00:00LOL! I don't understand the slavish devotion some readers have for him, and the plethora of scholars that devote their careers to making sense of his work. It's been about 7 yrs since the last time I tried to read Ulysses, and I'd like to attempt something by Joyce again, if only to find out if I still hate him, or if I simply lacked the patience to finish his books.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
