I have never really been a chess player. I ...Jay,

I have never really been a chess player. I know the rules but that's about as far as it goes. I guess I have very little eye for strategy. I've made a note of the Nabokov book you mention - although I don't (and can't) play the game, I have a certain amount of fascination about it.Falaisehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01296217731383114462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3069628911357973492.post-70246587146768782572013-03-02T11:46:47.786+00:002013-03-02T11:46:47.786+00:00Hi Falaise,
Sorry to be so late in commenting - I ...Hi Falaise,
Sorry to be so late in commenting - I meant to when this post was initially published but got distracted somehow.

I finally read this novella a year or so ago, and it was hard for me to believe I'd never heard of it until Alex at The Sleepless Reader told me about it (I was a fairly serious chess player for about 25 years). I liked the story for the most part, and the chess was fairly well presented, at least compared to other literary appearances it makes. I have experienced, in a small way, the utility of the game that Dr. B originally used. I often used it to distract myself from unpleasant reality (sitting in a dentist's chair, for example, reviewing the the moves of the Sveshinkov Variation in my minds eye)...

Have you read Luzhin's Defense by Nabokov? (Maybe it's just "The Defense" I can't remember just now) It's about a kind of idiot-savant master like the one on board the ocean liner in Zweig's book.

You don't mention if you play chess yourself(?) Coming up this year, London will be hosting the Candidates Tournament to determine the next challenger to World Champ Viswanathan Anand. (I don't play any more, but I'm still a fan and will be following it)

-JayAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
